A technician has to master the 3D scanner and the ways in which it captures the data of any given structure. Some even have to spend a good deal of time merging separate point clouds and decluttering areas where multiple point clouds overlap. This is often the result of a 3D scanner trying to capture the data of a space larger than their equipment’s limitations. In order to do so, they have to move their scanner to several different places within the space to ensure that no data points are left out in their final deliverable.

If that were not enough to learn, the data is fairly useless from a construction or engineering standpoint unless the pixelated image is traced and put into a 3D model. This data is not just pixelated; it is also layered in the sense that fields of depth are not always immediately apparent. 3D modelers have to be extremely cautious to ensure that each point of data from the point cloud is tied to its particular field of depth. While, the model provides the measuring standards for each nook and cranny of the space, it also provides the opportunity to specify gas lines from electrical lines and call out for specific building materials.

All of this detail still takes a great deal of time and a trained eye to ensure that the data points are represented correctly as they are converted to a 3D model. The slightest mistakes have often brought a domino effect of issues, adjustments, and redesign to the pre-production and construction phase of projects from small to large.

AMC theaters is now the largest movie theater chain in the world with over 380 movie theaters. In an effort to redesign their customer’s viewing experience and maximize the seating capacity in their theaters, AMC set out to have over 100 of their theaters captured by a scanning firm based in Detroit, Michigan. This firm has captured the 3D scans with Leica P-series scanners to ensure maximum point cloud accuracy, but needed assistance with processing the point cloud data.

Virtual 3D Group has been tasked with providing a 3D model for each theater, averaging three to four models per week. At a Level of Detail (LOD) 300, these models are extremely detailed and provide significant data for AMC Theater’s redesign efforts.

Virtual 3D Group’s newest project is working closely with the University of Michigan’s hospital. The school’s medical programs are among the nation’s most highly acclaimed. Graduates go on to do significant work in caring for patients in every area of medical expertise and help to advance medicine through research efforts.

A recent initiative to remodel a specialized wing of the hospital between the second and third floors brought this project to Virtual 3D Group. As a medical project, precision is of the utmost importance. Everything from the interior components of the hospital wing, to the duct work, gas lines, and electrical in the ceiling have to be modeled accurately. These details not only impact the remodeling process, but also have the potential to set back the hospital’s capacity to serve their patients sooner.
